💎 Honoré Daumier Financial and Businessmen (Robert Macaire)

Through his incisive and often biting social satire, Daumier exposed the hypocrisy, greed and opportunism of contemporary society, particularly in the worlds of finance, commerce and business.

This illustrated volume focuses on Robert Macaire, the fictional businessman whose exploits became a vehicle for Daumier’s sharp criticism of financial speculation and commercial dishonesty. The book brings together 100 full-page black-and-white reproductions, accompanied by a preface, catalogue and notes by Jean Adhémar. It offers a valuable insight into Daumier’s graphic work and the social realities of nineteenth-century France.
